Chase Davis, Matthew Waite and Derek Willis, who are attending the NICAR conference in Houston this weekend, list the free tools data-minded journalists can use instead of commercial alternatives, some of them costing thousands of dollars. Note that they're sharing the list on Google Docs -- also free (but not open source, as is the other software).
